It's Halloween Week! A whole week of spooky free cross stitch designs to download and stitch. Halloween has so many faces depending on where and when you grew up and where you might live now. For me is was always a evening of pouring rain, candy, silly monster movies, and wood smoke in the air. It was very often pointless to put a costume on at all because you had to wear all sorts of rain gear over the top! It never really figured in my life as an adult (because even though I like dressing up and eating candy and drinking, I hate going parties!).
What is Halloween like where you are?
Today, rather than a Halloween design, we have a design for Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead). It is the sugar skull or Calaveras in cross stitch. I am not religious or spiritual person but the idea behind this Central American holiday is something I can appreciate and even celebrate. It is an extremely death positive message. And rather than any sort of cultural appropriation here, this sugar skull cross stitch design is presented in that light and with the best of intentions.
The idea that there is a day (or several days) set aside to visit our dead loved ones and help them with their next phase of existence rather than being sad is an amazing attitude towards death. Our dead are always with us and they want to party. That's pretty cool. There is also something so interesting to me in the juxtaposition of the permanent (cross stitch) art form and the ephemeral (sugar) art form. That so much time and effort goes into making something so beautiful that then dissolves or is eaten.
This free sugar skull cross stitch design took a lot of research and reference images to come together. I am really pleased with the back stitched detail. So probably not for a novice stitcher.
